Family Day Care Educator Position Description
Family Day Care Educators are providers of high quality approved child care in their own homes. Educators can provide care for a total of seven (7) children, with no more than four (4) of those children being non-school aged children. This number also includes any of the Educators’ own children under the age of 13 years.
Educator Duties
- Responsible for the active supervision of children aged birth to 12 years
- Maintain a safe environment for children’s play and learning
- Comply with all the Policies and Procedures of CCA Family Day Care
- Met the requirements of the National Quality Standard in all seven quality areas
- Provide a wide range of learning experiences for children encompassing both indoor and outdoor environments
- Observe, plan and evaluate child experiences in an ongoing cycle of programming and documentation
- Develop and maintain professional relationships with CCA staff, families and the wider community
- Develop a thorough knowledge of all children in care
- Provide an inclusive environment for all children
Reporting Roles
CCA Family Day Care Educators are supported by the Coordination Unit staff and supervised through home visits by their Educator Support Officer (ESO). ESO’s conduct unannounced home visits at least once per month.
Each Educator is assessed annually at the anniversary of their full registration with a Home Safety Check. Professional Development plans are developed annually in conjunction with the ESO and submitted as part of the annual home safety check process.
Key Responsibilities
Administration:
- Develop and maintain documentation in relation to activities and experiences offered to children as well as information for families about their child’s progress
- Maintain effective record keeping in relation to fortnightly timesheets
- Maintain child’s enrolment and health records accurately and confidentially
Home environment:
- Complete daily safety checks of the care environment and annual home safety checks
- Provide a varying and engaging environment for children
- Regularly observe all the children in care and evaluate the care environment to cater for the needs of the children
- Actively participate in the play environment with the children
Professional Development:
- Maintain compulsory First Aid, Asthma and Anaphylaxis training
- Attend at least 3 additional training activities and 2 Educator forums each registration year
- Review the Professional Development plan with your ESO on an annual basis
- Continue to work towards to overall service Quality Improvement Plan
Selection Criteria
Qualifications:
- Minimum Certificate III in Children’s Services
- Senior First Aid, Asthma Management and Anaphylaxis Management
Experience:
- Previous experience in working with children birth to 12 years
Skills:
- Ability to plan a variety of learning experiences and environments for children
- Demonstrate organization and record keeping skills
- Demonstrate an ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with children, families and service staff
Knowledge:
- A thorough knowledge of child development birth to 12 years
- Knowledge of the health and safety aspects required in a child care environment
- Awareness of the National Quality Standards
- Awareness of the Education and Care Services National Law and Regulations
Values and attributes:
- Possess the personal qualities of maturity, tolerance, flexibility and warmth
- Have a genuine interest in the care and development of young children
- Be in good physical and mental health
Additional requirements:
- Be the owner or occupier of a suitable residence
- Have a connected and working home phone
- Be available to work at least 4 days per week, 8 hours each day
- Be able to provide a smoke free environment
- Have access to a computer and printer in your home
- Have a mobile phone
- Hold a current Working with Children clearance – including all household members 18yrs and over
- Be willing to take children outside the home for learning experiences – parks, libraries etc
All new Educators will have a probation period of 6 months. Only Educators, who continue to provide a high quality of care, are fully compliant with policies and procedures and who are meeting the requirements of the National Quality Standard will have their registration made fully operational after the probation period. Educators who do not meet the require standard within the probation period will have their names removed from the Family Day Care register.
